Cumbria children's services jobs at risk

Around 300 children's services posts are at risk in Cumbria as the county council braces itself for a raft of cuts to government grants.

A county council spokesman confirmed that half the jobs at risk are in children's services "because many of the government grants where we think there will be cuts are in children's services".

The county council has staged a consultation on the plans asking local residents to list their spending priorities. The deadline is 31 January and the council will consider the responses as it prepares its budget for 2011/12.

Other services earmarked for cuts include child and adolescent mental health services, Connexions and Sure Start. "We don't know how much these will be cut by at this stage," the spokesman added.

Other services at risk include youth offending services and services to tackle teenage pregnancy.
