Court battle leads to traveller family facing eviction

1 min read Social Care
A traveller family with nine children is facing eviction from their land following an eight-year planning dispute.

When the family bought the land in Somerset nearly a decade ago they applied for planning permission to live on it, but had their request refused because they were already living on a council-owned site.

The appeals that followed eventual led to the high court, which ordered the family to cease occupation of the site by the end of August this year.

Debbie Harvey, policy advisor at the Children's Society, said: "We are very concerned about the impending eviction of the Gawbridge site in Somerset and the impact on the children living there.

"Evicting children and their families from their home is likely to have a serious impact on their education, health and welfare. Forcing children to live on the side of the road, in conditions that are not safe and without access to basic amenities, is simply unacceptable."
