Councils to offer runaway children interview on return

Children who go missing from their family home or a care home will be given the opportunity to talk to an independent person about why they ran away, as part of government attempts to improve safeguarding.

The new rules will mean councils will have to offer children an Independent Return Interview upon their return to home, in a bid to find out why they ran away and how to prevent it happening again.

Children’s minister Edward Timpson said that support for children who run away has been “patchy” for too long.

“Our new rules mean that every child will now have the chance to talk to a sympathetic, independent person,” he said.

“Only then will we find out why they ran away and if they came to harm, and help to make sure they don’t run away again.

“Councils must now rise to the challenge.
