Councils must improve records of missing children

1 min read Social Care
Local authorities need to improve the way they record the number of children that go missing from care and care homes, a residential childcare expert has warned.

Figures recently released in the House of Commons Library are unreliable and do not give a clear picture of the problem, according to Jonathan Stanley, manager of the National Centre for Excellence in Residential Childcare.

The records, which show a local authority breakdown of the number of children that go missing from care homes, are published along with the proviso that "the numbers should be treated with caution".

Stanley said: "These figures show the need for direction in the collection of such statistics given in the new statutory guidance on children who run away from home or care."
