The funding, which is being provided through the Cabinet Office’s Delivering Differently for Young People (DDYP) programme, will be shared between Brighton Council, Devon County Council, Hartlepool Council, Lewisham Council, St Helens Council and Trafford Council.
The cash is intended to help local authorities restructure or redesign their youth services and improve outcomes for young people. The six councils were chosen from a total of 23 applicants.
??Youth minister Rob Wilson, said: “This funding will help local authorities deliver youth services in more effective ways, inspiring them to find better ways of delivering more within their budgets.”
The funding programme previously provided £500,000 to 11 local authorities, with a view to them transforming their services by March 2016.
Councils taking part in the scheme must sign up to an agreement to share their experiences of setting up the alternative delivery model for other councils to learn from.
