Councils 'fear for future of breakfast and after-school clubs' post-pandemic

Local authorities are concerned about shortages in school-aged childcare such as breakfast and after-school clubs due to the impact of the coronaviurus pandemic, a report has warned.

A study by Frontier Economics and Coram Family and Childcare, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, found that while there was an absence of any widespread view among local authorities that the childcare sector as a whole is on the brink of financial disaster, there was specific concern about childcare for older children of working parents.

Interviews with 122 local authority early years leads found that most areas have not seen, and do not immediately anticipate, widespread closures that would lead to shortages of childcare, although many felt it was too early to tell what the full impact for the sector would be once financial support that has been provided winds up.
