Councils call for under-18 sunbed ban

Under-18s in England should be banned from using sunbeds to protect them from skin cancer, the Local Government Association (LGA) has warned.

Council leaders are also calling for a ban on unmanned tanning salons, after cases in which children as young as 10 suffered burns on unattended sunbeds.

Margaret Eaton, chairman of the LGA it is too easy for young people to use tanning salons at "pocket money prices".

She warned: "Children are seeing images of their favourite stars looking sun-kissed all-year-round and they want to look the same. It is unacceptable that people should be able to walk into a tanning salon and use a sunbed completely unchecked. We need to make sure someone is on hand to stop children hurting themselves."
