Council to cut £3.3m from early help budget

A council has outlined plans to save £3.3m through an overhaul of early help services for disadvantaged families.

Buckinghamshire County Council said the savings can be found by creating a new 0-19 children and families service that would see support for families with young children delivered by nine teams of lead family workers in a wide range of community venues rather than predominantly through children's centres.

The new family workers would link up with volunteers, charities and local parish councils to offer support and meet with families in their homes as well as venues such as local cafes.

The council is looking to implement the changes following a review in July, which concluded that its current network of 35 children's centres was failing to target families most in need of support.

The review found that 43 per cent of centres are in the county's most affluent areas, while just 29 per cent were in its most disadvantaged localities.

It also concluded that an overhaul was needed as an open-access approach through children's centres meant that families most in need were not receiving help early enough.
