Sefton council said the Mind, Exercise, Nutrition, Do it! (Mend) programmes, which help families with children aged from seven to 13 live healthy lifestyles, had proved a success.
Children taking part had lost on average 1.3kg and 3.5cm from their waistlines. Adults taking part lost on average 4kg and 2cm from their waists.
The programmes, which last ten weeks, focus on discussion, nutrition topics, fun exercise and talking with parents about problems such as sleeping patterns and bullying.
Natalie Dowd, senior development manager, said: "The programme's focus isn't on temporary dieting fads, but rather focuses on empowerment of the children themselves, so they follow the principles of the programme to lose weight naturally and build the foundations for a lifetime of healthy living."
From this September the number programmes will double.
