Cost-of-living crisis taking ‘devastating’ toll on young carers

More than half of children and young people providing unpaid care to family members say the cost-of-living crisis is impacting them or their family, a new report from Carers Trust has found.

Some 32 per cent of young carers said they always or usually face additional costs due to their role as an unpaid carer, according to the Carers Trust’s new report, Being a young carer is not a choice; it’s just what we do.

The UK-wide survey found that many young carers are contributing to or managing family finances amid the cost-of-living crisis, and more than half said they were usually worried about things becoming more expensive.

One young carer said: “I’m paying for two people out of my small part-time income, and it’s even more impossible to do during the cost-of-living rise.”
