Conservative conference: Tories slam Brown's 'tough talk' on teenage mothers

1 min read Education Health
The Conservatives have slated Gordon Brown over his "desperation to talk tough" in delivering last week's pledge to create more foyers providing support to 16- and 17-year-old mothers.

David Willetts, shadow universities, skills and families secretary said: "Why didn't [Brown] go the whole hog and call his hostels workhouses?

He went on: "Why did he have to pretend they were punitive hostels for young parents when they aren't? He was taking a worthwhile initiative by an excellent charity and deliberately making it sound harsh. This is a man so desperate that even compassion has to be presented as severity: he has indeed lost his moral compass."

Willetts also used his speech to criticise the delivery of careers advice under Connexions. "Too many young people are lost and drifting because nobody has taken the trouble to find out what their aspirations are and give them a route map to fulfilling them. They need professional careers advisers.
