Conservative conference: 20 million pound university scheme for apprentices unveiled

Education
The Conservatives have said they will pump 20 million pounds a year into funding 1,200 apprentices to go on to university and end the "glass ceiling" in vocational skills.

The cash will provide bursaries to apprentices to study degrees predominantly in science, technology, engineering and mathematics.

The Conservatives are billing the scheme as a way to boost the nation’s science base by funnelling young people with a non-academic background to study at university.

Many young people find themselves and discover their self-confidence when they master a skill. But they should be able to go on studying afterwards when they might gain even more, said David Willetts, shadow innovation, universities and skills secretary.

If we want vocational skills to gain the respect they deserve, then people need to know they will provide a ladder of opportunity and not a glass ceiling.
