Conservative conference: Relationship advice for newlyweds

1 min read Social Care
Newly married couples will be urged to take relationship education courses in a bid to prevent marriages from breaking down, under a Conservative government.

The party has formed an agreement with the Local Government Association, which will issue guidance to wedding registrars to reflect the importance of marriage preparation and promote the benefits of relationship support.

Shadow families minister Maria Miller told the conference on Tuesday: The evidence is clear: children who have both parents around and involved in their lives do better.

We want local registrars to start signposting couples to pre-marital education as a matter of routine.

The time has come to say that the support we give to relationships matters, that the balance between out home and work life matters, that our families matter.

Miller also reiterated the party’s pledge to divert funds from Sure Start outreach workers to finance 4,200 extra health visitors available to parents of children up to the age of five.
