"You could say that having a baby is bad for you," said Rob Williams, chief executive of the Fatherhood Institute. "Your stress levels increase, your productivity at work is lowered and your happiness with your partner is likely to suffer."
The report collates the latest research in relationship studies and argues that earlier intervention would improve the situation for parents.
"We need a new way of thinking about parental intervention," said Williams. "A lot of parents who can afford antenatal classes take them, but we think they should be paying for relationship training."
The institute recommends that all expectant and new fathers should be offered at least one simple and cheap intervention to build their skills and self-confidence in handling infants.
