Conservative conference: Family life key to tackling gang violence

Conservative policy for tackling gangs and youth violence will centre around attempting to rebuild families, shadow home secretary Chris Grayling has said.

Speaking on the factors that can result in young people turning to gangs or crime, Grayling highlighted family life as one of the key reasons.

He told delegates at a fringe meeting at the Conservative party conference in Manchester that steps that can be taken to address the issue include altering the tax system and educating new parents.

"We have a real challenge in helping younger parents who lack any clear sense of parenting skills or how to develop children in their early years.

"We also need to remove the disincentive in the tax system for couples staying together.

"At the moment it is more financially attractive to live apart rather than together."
