Concerns about child neglect double over two years, NSPCC reports

The number of calls to the NSPCC's helpline regarding child neglect has doubled over the past two years.

Latest figures reveal that the charity dealt with 12,100 calls from the public about neglect in 2011/12, the highest ever volume on the issue and double the number of calls regarding neglect recorded in 2009/10.

Dr Ruth Gardner, head of the charity’s neglect programme, called for research to investigate the causes of this dramatic rise, which she said coincided with funding cuts to family support services and an increase in the number of children being taken into care.

She said: “More people than ever are contacting the NSPCC about child neglect. Some of this will be down to the public being more willing to speak out and this can only be a positive thing, but there is clearly a worrying trend, not just in our figures, but from a range of agencies and bodies.”
