Compulsory community service could generate 1bn

1 min read Education Youth Work
Community service should be compulsory in schools for children aged from seven upwards, according to proposals made by think tank Demos.

Demos' Service Nation report calls for a national civic service funded by interest charges to student loans.

The proposals would see children taking part in "service learning" as part of the national curriculum. Children would be expected to work in teams outside of school hours on positive activities in their local community.

The report's co-author, Sonia Sodha, said: "The benefits of service learning are clear from evidence in the US. Service learning is associated with improved academic achievement and is also a great way to incorporate more practical and experiential learning into the curriculum."

The report suggests 100 hours of compulsory community service for university students across the course of a three-year degree. It also proposes means tested grants and subsidised loans, like student loans, for 18- to 24-year-olds who wish to take part in full-time voluntary work.
