The advice is included on a new website, featuring guidance drawn up by colleges and the Learning and Skills Improvement Service, alongside three government departments including the Department for Children, Schools and Families.
Speaking at an event hosted by the Association of Colleges to tackle and prevent gang problems in London colleges, David Lammy, higher education minister, said the site allows colleges to share information on how to tackle the issue.
"Colleges are at the coal face, not just supporting young people, but often very vulnerable young people, he said.
"This is work that goes unsung and requires immense expertise, which is why you are at the forefront of the battle against guns, gangs and knives.
