Colleges must help ICT students access work experience says Ofsted

1 min read Education
Colleges need to work with employers to help information and technology students access work experience according to an Ofsted report.

The inspectorate said that teachers should also make use of employers to update their technical skills and knowledge. Its study of ICT, leisure, tourism and travel courses called for the government to disseminate good practice and for colleges to develop opportunities for students to access realistic learning environments.

Chief inspector Christine Gilbert said: "Giving students the opportunity to gain hands-on experience, to practise and learn from those in business and industry is vitally important."

More than half the colleges surveyed in the leisure, travel and tourism report gave learners the opportunity to practise in realistic working environments. Inspectors found many colleges had established links with local primary schools to give learners the chance to instruct or coach relevant outdoor education and sports activities. Students studying tourism and travel were able to use mock airline check-in desks and aircraft cabins to simulate working environments.
