Churches fail to adequately safeguard children

More than half of people recruited by churches to work with children are not asked to supply referees, complete application forms, or attend an interview, according to a report.

Research carried out by the Churches' Child Protection Advisory Service - which trains members of faith and non-faith organisations in safeguarding children - found that only 46 per cent of churches take up written references when recruiting a new worker, only 45 per cent ask candidates to complete application forms, and just 50 per cent interview candidates.

The survey of 899 churches also showed that many workers were not appropriately supported or managed - in some churches, 40 per cent of workers had no named supervisor.

"Churches need to ensure that all those in regular contact with children undergo safeguarding training on appointment", the report said.
