The past two weeks have brought disappointing news on the physical activity levels of children and young people.
First came Taking Part 2012/13, a Department for Culture, Media and Sport survey of 1,937 children and young people that delivered a heavy blow to hopes that the 2012 Olympic Games would have fostered more active childhoods.
It showed that while 91 per cent of fiveto 15-year-olds had played sport in the four weeks prior to the survey in 2008/09, this had slid down to 88 per cent in 2012/13.
Figures for the percentage of fiveto 10-year-olds who had played sport in the week before the survey were even more discouraging. In 2008/09, 74.7 per cent had played sport, but in 2012/13 the proportion had slumped to 67.2 per cent (11to 15-year-olds played slightly more, however, rising from 88.8 per cent to 89.1 per cent).
