
A survey of 1,200 members of the children and young people's workforce by The Communication Trust found that in addition to 54 per cent of respondents lacking training, nearly two thirds (60 per cent) had little or no initial training focused on identifying and supporting children with speech, language and communication needs (SLCN).
Only 4 per cent of the workforce felt they had received sufficient training in relation to SLCN. Main barriers to training were cited as a lack of budget and time. Respondents also said that other work commitments, like safeguarding, were prioritised.
However, the workforce was unanimous (99 per cent) in recognising the importance of SLC skills for children and young people.
