Children's Plan: Social workers to gain from training reforms

The government has announced a fresh drive to improve the status and training of children's social workers in the Children's Plan.

Central to these plans is the creation of a framework for professional development. Further details on the framework will be published in a children’s workforce action plan due out in early 2008.

There will be more training for social workers on the Adoption and Children Act 2002 with a particular focus on special guardianship arrangements.

The government will also pilot a fast-track and work-based route into children’s social work, which will be aimed at mature graduates.

The plan says the Home Office will announce policies to provide more support to unaccompanied young asylum seekers in the near future, including improvements to the process of making asylum decisions.
