
Coutinho, who took up the role of children, families and wellbeing minister in October last year, replaces Grant Shapps who has been named as Defence Secretary following the resignation of Ben Wallace earlier today (31 August).
The MP for East Surrey since 2019 is the ninth person to hold the brief for children’s social care and early years in the last decade and the fourth since September last year.
David Johnston, MP for Wantage and Didcot since 2019, has been appointed as children, families and wellbeing minister, replacing Coutinho.
