Children's minister Claire Coutinho promoted to Energy Secretary

Claire Coutinho has been promoted to Energy and Net Zero Secretary, Downing Street has announced, meaning the Department for Education will have had seven different children's ministers since the last election.

Coutinho, who took up the role of children, families and wellbeing minister in October last year, replaces Grant Shapps who has been named as Defence Secretary following the resignation of Ben Wallace earlier today (31 August).

The MP for East Surrey since 2019 is the ninth person to hold the brief for children’s social care and early years in the last decade and the fourth since September last year.

David Johnston, MP for Wantage and Didcot since 2019, has been appointed as children, families and wellbeing minister, replacing Coutinho.

He will be the seventh person to hold the role since the last election in December 2019:
