
Increasingly frequent changes to ministerial post-holders at the Department for Education has raised questions over the government’s commitment to improve services for children, young people and families at a time when three major reviews are being considered by government.
Since the Conservative and Liberal Democrat coalition government came to power in 2010 there have been nine Education Secretaries each with an average tenure of 16 months. Meanwhile, in the last five years there have been six different children’s ministers (see below).
With Prime Minister Rishi Sunak now in office following Liz Truss’s resignation, there is likely to be another cabinet reshuffle and the possibility that a new set of ministers will be installed at the DfE.
