Children's commissioner launches inquiry into school exclusions

The children's commissioner for England is to examine whether children's rights are being sufficiently considered in the current system of school exclusions.

Using her powers under the Children’s Act 2004 for the first time, Dr Maggie Atkinson has opened an inquiry to address whether the current system of school exclusions is consistent with the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child.

She will also investigate whether schools and other public bodies are meeting the requirements of the Equality Act 2010.

A call for evidence will be open for 12 weeks from today (13 July) and findings from the inquiry will be published in early March 2012.

Atkinson said: "Time and again children raise the issue of exclusion with me and the evidence suggests this is an area we should pay particular attention to.
