Children of alcohol abusers lack specialist support

Children living with parents that abuse alcohol are not getting the support they need because of a lack of specialist services, it has been claimed.

Turning Point, a charity helping people with complex needs, including eight- to 18-year-olds living with parents or carers who abuse alcohol, is keen to highlight the issue and is calling for more funding for services.

Government research suggests up to 1.3 million children in the UK are living with parents who misuse alcohol.

But programmes specifically designed to help children affected by such situations are few and far between and provide services for just a fraction of those potentially affected.

Sue Winterburn, who manages Turning Point's Base Camp service, which addresses issues resulting from parental alcohol abuse, said services need improving.
