The House of Commons Public Accounts Committee has called on the Department of Transport to prioritise promoting targeted road safety schemes in deprived areas that suffer most from child pedestrian casualties in an attempt to address the issue.
A report by the committee, Improving Road Safety for Pedestrians and Cyclists in Great Britain, found that there have been sustained improvements in child pedestrian casualty rates since the government's two most recent road safety strategy periods, but the current rate remains "unacceptable".
"Pedestrians under 17 in the most deprived areas are four times more likely to be killed or injured than those in the least deprived areas," the report said.
