1 min read Education
Children who are entitled to free school meals are three times more likely to be excluded from school than their wealthier counterparts, according to the latest government statistics.

While the number of exclusions dropped by more than 10 per cent last year, secondary schools in very deprived areas had four per cent more exclusions than schools in the most affluent areas.

Almost 80 per cent of all pupils excluded from school were boys and pupils with special educational needs (SEN) were more than eight times more likely to be excluded than those without SEN.

Children of Gypsy or Roma heritage were more likely to be excluded than any other ethnic group and black Caribbean children were three times as likely to be excluded than the rest of the school population.
