Childminding: Doubts cast over findings of DfES workforce survey findings

1 min read
Doubts have been raised about the number of childminders claiming to be fully qualified.

Figures from the Department for Education and Skills' childcareworkforce survey show 43 per cent of childminders said they had a Level3 NVQ in 2005.

But last week Robert Kinnaird, a researcher at social research agencyNatCen, said there was doubt about the figures since it was not clear ifchildminders had completed an entire level three qualification or justcompleted one or two units of the relevant course.

He said the next DfES survey would establish how many childmindersundertaking a level three qualification had completed it in full as itwas impossible to say how overestimated the existing figures are.

Charlie Rice, director for membership and professional development atthe National Childminding Association of England and Wales, said theassociation's own figures showed only 26 per cent of childminders had afull level three qualification, although that only covers the 48,500association members compared to 70,000 childminders in England.
