Child poverty: Ministers join picnic to highlight the importance of childcare

Cabinet ministers joined children for a picnic to highlight the link between childcare and child poverty last week.

Children's secretary Ed Balls and work and pensions secretary Peter Hain attended the picnic in St James's Park in London to mark the 21st birthday of national childcare charity the Daycare Trust.

Hilary Fisher, director of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, which organised the picnic in partnership with the Daycare Trust, called on the Government to secure the provision of good-quality, accessible childcare to help families get out of poverty.

"The Government must give families on low incomes the choices and opportunities they need to balance work and family responsibilities," she said.
