Child mental health services must be protected, councils warned

1 min read Health
Youth mental health charity YoungMinds has written to every council leader in the country urging them to protect child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) in the next financial year.

The letter warns against cutting mental health services for the young and highlights the financial case for investment in early intervention, ahead of the final round of local government budget-setting meetings for 2012/13, which will be held in March.

"Services such as local-authority-funded counselling services are vital in intervening early to pick up children and young people who otherwise would have to cope alone and face their problems escalating," the letter states.

"We believe that the comprehensive CAMHS model is the most effective way to deliver the full range of mental health services to young people. Comprehensive CAMHS spans a range of services, from promoting good mental health, to early intervention when problems first arise, to specialist mental health interventions provided by clinicians including child psychologists and psychiatrists."
