Charity warns of cuts 'crisis' in children's mental health services

Mental health experts have warned of a national crisis for child and adolescent mental health services (CAMHS) after it emerged that more than three quarters of NHS commissioning bodies have cut or frozen budgets.

Freedom of Information requests by children and young people's mental health charity YoungMinds found that 77 per cent (74 out of 96) of clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) that responded have either frozen or cut their CAMHS budgets between 2013/14 and 2014/2015.

Meanwhile, 55 per cent (56 out of 101) of local authorities in England that responded have cut, frozen or increased the budget at a rate below inflation between 2013/14 and 2014/15.

YoungMinds has called for NHS England to instruct CCGs to immediately prioritise the resourcing of children and young people’s mental health to ensure it is sufficiently resourced.

It wants particular regard to early intervention and prevention.
