Charity urges rethink on childcare database closure

Families will be left without vital information about childcare provision following the imminent closure of a national online database of childcare and family services, a charity has warned.

The Family Information Directory website provides information on childcare across the UK and receives 40,000 hits a day. More than 16,000 childcare professionals post information on the site.

But after Department for Education (DfE) funding for the site stops on 31 March, the Daycare Trust is warning that the lack of a planned replacement will make it difficult for both childcare businesses and parents to find each other. From 1 April information previously held on the directory will only be accessible by contacting individual local authorities.

Anand Shukla, acting chief executive of the Daycare Trust, said: "We believe the closure of this site, with no planned replacement, will remove an important source of information from parents. Choosing the right kind of childcare is a hugely important decision to make, as families seek high-quality, affordable, local childcare that meets their needs and gives their children the best start in life.
