Charity has forbidden Labour donation returned

1 min read Education
Children's charity and after school club provider Schoolfriendetc, also known as Catz Club, has had a donation it made to the Labour party returned.

It is forbidden for charities to donate money to political parties, however, this August an MP complained to the Charities Commission that Catz Club had donated £7,500 to Labour.

The commission investigated and the claim was found to be true. The money has been returned to the charity.

Andrew Hind, chief executive of the Charity Commission, said: Donations to political parties are absolutely prohibited for charities, so this was of serious concern to us.

The charity confirmed the money would be returned to it within days of the concern first being raised. This is a good result and means we do not have to look at the question of liability – in a similar situation if an inappropriate donation was not returned we would require the trustees to personally repay the funds to ensure the charity doesn’t lose out.
