Charity calls for extra support for adopted children on return to school

Schools will need to put in place a package of psychological and practical support for vulnerable children to help them make a smooth transition back to full-time education once the UK’s lockdown measures are eased, a leading care charity has said.

A survey carried out by Adoption UK of around 600 adoptive parents found that 63 per cent thought their child would need additional support to manage the transition back to their education setting, with concerns greatest among parents of younger children.

Measures schools may need to put in place include extra counselling, mental health and wellbeing support and help with learning, including one-to-one support. Additional funding in the short to medium term may be needed to help schools employ more staff to deliver the extra support.

The charity says national and local government should “be thinking ahead on the issue and providing advice and guidance to settings around, for example, phased return”.
