Charities use sport to encourage young people to stay in education

Youth Work
Around 4,000 disadvantaged young people across London are to take part in a sports initiative aimed at improving their chances of staying in education or securing a job.
The Street Elite initiative will involve football, rugby and cricket events and training to help young people living in 12 housing estates in London to improve their lives.

The sessions will have a focus on teamwork and playing by strict rules.

It is hoped that disadvantaged young people will also take part as coaches to run sessions in their own communities.

The initiative is run by youth charities The Lord’s Taverners and Cricket for Change and has funding for the next three years through house builder The Berkeley Group.

Cricket for Change chief executive Andy Sellins said: "This programme, using multi sports, is a fantastic way of engaging young people who have disengaged from mainstream education. It allows them to gain new skills and improve their prospects."
