Those taking part must carry out 30 hours of work experience a week over a 13-week period. If they do not take part “without good reason” their claim for jobseeker’s allowance will be “discontinued and they will not receive benefits”, according to a Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) statement.
In launching the scheme, employment minister Chris Grayling said a variety of sectors will be involved, including charities and social enterprises.
“All placements will provide work for the benefit of the community. They will not be taking any jobs that would normally be paid positions,” a DWP spokeswoman added.
