Government response on work experience 'disappointing'

Calls to improve "patchy and inconsistent" work experience for young people have been met with "no concrete commitments" from government, according to a British Youth Council (BYC) committee.

The Youth Select Committee, made up of 11- to 18-year-olds, published its Realising the Potential of Work Experience report in November last year, and submitted a series of recommendations to the government, which has now responded.

The committee describes the report as representing an "extensive investigation into the barriers faced by young people across the country in accessing quality work experience".

One recommendation was for the Department for Education to conduct research on the links between work experience and choosing technical education at 16 and above.

It said the DfE should use the results to subsequently divert schools funding towards work experience.
