Charities appeal for action to address underlying issues of substance misuse

More needs to be done to identify young people with substance abuse issues and address the underlying issues, two charities have said.

YoungMinds and Addaction say young people who misuse substances may have underlying trauma which is not being addressed, and have called on local commissioners to take action.

The charities said local clinical commissioning groups should invest in early intervention support, including training for professionals in contact with young people with drug and alcohol issues, such as youth workers and health professionals, so that they can better spot underlying issues such as neglect and abuse and offer support.

They also say health commissioners should also consider investing in support for the parents and families of young people with substance abuse issues.

In addition, health and youth services should be encouraged to work together to develop support and commissioners should carry out a review of local specialist help for young people with substance misuse issues.
