Project: Platform Middlesbrough
Purpose: To reduce substance abuse among young people
Funding: Mainly from Middlesbrough Council and public health and criminal justice organisations. Includes £130,000 a year for the delivery of specialist drug and alcohol services
Background: Platform is a specialist young people's drug and alcohol service that has operated in Middlesbrough since 2007. The service is run by voluntary sector organisation Disc (Developing Initiatives, Supporting Communities). It was initially established to work with young people with complex substance misuse problems, but has expanded to undertake prevention work in schools and colleges.
Action: Platform offers two types of services - brief interventions and extended treatments. Brief interventions involve a young person having a discussion with a worker who can offer advice and information to help prevent drug and alcohol problems. Extended treatments can include counselling, motivational interviewing, cognitive behavioural therapy, and multi-systemic therapy for the whole family, including siblings. In 2012/13, 136 young people were referred to the service, resulting in 37 brief interventions and 71 extended treatments.
