Care leavers to get free bus travel in Manchester

The mayor of Greater Manchester has pledged free bus travel for care leavers as part of a range of regional commitments to support disadvantaged and vulnerable young people.

Andy Burnham unveiled the initiative in proposals for his mayoral general budget for 2020/21 which would see care leavers access the city’s Our Pass scheme up to the age of 21.

Burnham said the scheme, introduced as a pilot in September 2019, followed the introduction of a council tax exemption for care leavers that came into force in April last year.

“I’m delivering on our commitments to care leavers who we know face major disadvantages in life.

“I want to do what I can with the powers I have to help ease some of the pressures on them by helping them get around by providing free bus travel,” he said.
