Campaigners brand review of local authority duties 'distasteful'

The government's review of local authority statutory duties is "distasteful and damaging" for the protection of children's rights, campaigners have claimed.

In its response to the review, the Children’s Rights Alliance for England (Crae) said it is alarming that "important provisions for children" have been included in the six-week consultation that closed this week.

The Department for Communities and Local Government published the "informal" consultation on its website, covering nearly every legal duty for local government, to help identify any "unnecessary burdens".

The duty to safeguard and promote the welfare of children, the duty to investigate if a child may be suffering harm, the duty of care for children’s home standards and the duty to reduce child poverty are all included in the consultation.
