Call to extend pupil premium to over-16s to aid pandemic catch up

A report by the social mobility organisation finds that more than one in five A-level students missed more than 20 days of school in the run up to this year’s exams due to Covid-19.

It also notes that 72 per cent of teachers say that they think the government’s handling of this year’s exams – the first since the pandemic began – will widen the attainment gap between children from less-affluent families and their peers.

In a series of recommendations to improve opportunities for A-level students from disadvantaged backgrounds, The Sutton Trust is calling on the government to extend pupil premium funding to post-16 education in a bid to narrow the gap.
