Call for more guidance on vitamin D intake

1 min read
The chief medical officer is calling on health professionals to warn parents of the dangers of vitamin D deficiency among children.

Professor Dame Sally Davies has contacted midwives, GPs and nurses to ensure that government advice for at-risk groups, such as toddlers and pregnant women, to take vitamin D supplements is being passed on.

Recent research by The Feeding for Life Foundation suggests this is not happening in many areas. The research, released last October, found that one in four toddlers in the UK is vitamin D deficient. This leaves young people at greater risk of diseases such as rickets.

Free vitamin supplements are available to disadvantaged families though the Healthy Start scheme.

Davies has also asked the government’s Scientific Advisory Committee to review current guidance on vitamin D intake.
