Call for more arts education in schools

Education
More should be done to ensure children and young people are given arts education, according a policy review.

In the report Brian McMaster, a former director of the Edinburgh Festival, says schools and some arts organisations are not recognising the importance of cultural education.

Culture Secretary James Purnell asked McMaster to carry out the review last summer. It will be used to shape Department for Culture, Media and Sport policy.

In the review McMaster praises the government's Children's Plan commitment to give all children access to five hours cultural education a week.

He said: "This would be a remarkable achievement. As well as quantity, however, we must also see quality."
