Budget 2024: Rachel Reeves pledges to protect early years and kinship care funding

Support for education, early years and kinship and foster carers will be protected in the upcoming Budget despite the government facing a £22 billion funding blackhole, the Chancellor of the Exchequer has pledged.

Speaking ahead of the Labour’s first Budget in 14 years, which will be announced on Wednesday (30 October), Rachel Reeves has committed to “improving opportunities for our children and young people”.

The first female chancellor has recommitted to investing £1.4 billion to rebuild “crumbling” schools following the reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete (RAAC) scandal which saw settings close in September last year due to structural concerns.

She has also pledged £1.8bn to fund the roll-out of the previous government’s childcare expansion programme which will see eligible children aged nine months and above receive 30 hours of funded early years entitlement from September next year.
