'Booze Asbos' to cut alcohol-fuelled crime

1 min read Youth Justice
Young people involved in alcohol-fuelled crime and antisocial behaviour face being given "booze Asbos" under new measures that came into force yesterday.

Police and local authorities can now apply for Drinking Banning Orders – which have been dubbed "booze Asbos" – on individuals aged 16 and upwards who are regularly involved in crime or disorder under the influence of alcohol.

Under the orders, magistrates can impose any condition they consider necessary to prevent the individual from committing further offences, including banning them from consuming alcohol in public places, including certain pubs, bars and off-licences.

The orders last from two months to two years, and breaches of them can be punished by fines of up to £2,500. Individuals who are given a "booze Asbo" will also be referred to a support course to help address their alcohol misuse.
