Blackpool children's services downgraded to 'inadequate'

Ofsted has rated Blackpool children's services as "inadequate" due to "longstanding and widespread" failures that are leaving children at risk of harm.

Inspectors visited Blackpool Council in November and December last year for its first full inspection of children's services since being rated as "requires improvement" in 2014.

Since then the quality of strategic leadership has declined and the pace of improvement has been too slow, Ofsted found.

This is leading to failures in responding swiftly and effectively when children are at risk of harm.

"Longstanding and widespread failures in the quality of social work practice mean that many children are not having their needs responded to in the right way or at the right time," states Ofsted's report
