Birmingham youth and early years services jobs under threat

Around 1,300 early years and youth services jobs in Birmingham are under threat as part of a council wide reorganisation.

Unison representatives were told by Birmingham City Council officials at a meeting at the end of last week that the plans could affect around 700 jobs in youth services and a similar amount in early years.

During the meeting the council issued a Section 188 notice alerting the union to the risk of redundancy surrounding the jobs.

Unison assistant branch secretary Caroline Johnson said: "We are just trying to get our heads around it at the moment and will be then looking to meet with members to decide on how to proceed."

Les Lawrence, the council's cabinet member for children, young people and families, said that even though a Section 188 notice has been issued the number of job losses could be minimal.
